12 Things that will make you a happier person

Life is not always easy. Everyday we face new challenges, new worries, new bills and so much more. We all have a lot to carry on our shoulders and the responsibility as we get older only grows larger. But ultimately, if we let these struggles take over our life, it adds extra stress and cheats us of our happiness. As I have gotten older, I have become a worrier, about anything and everything. Constantly worrying about things I have absolutely no control over. It is hard not to, especially once you become a mom. But there are things you can do to help! Here are 12 ways to cope with everyday struggles, detox some of the stress in our lives and make you a happier person.

Retail therapy:
I swear this is what keeps me sane. There’s something that shopping satisfies in me that just makes me a happier person. When you look good, you feel good so don’t be afraid to splurge every once in awhile for a clothing item that you really want.

Get a Mani-Pedi:
Call up a girlfriend and go get a manicure or pedicure, or both! It is relaxing and you will have amazing hands and feet to show off. You can also do a mother / daughter day or just take some time to relax on your own if you need some quiet time to yourself.

Get your hair done:
Sometimes we get bored with the same hairstyle or just need a Refresh. Pick a fresh new cut or color to get you excited about your look. I love to brighten with highlights for the summer. For fall, if you can pull it off, try a bold or darker look.

Get a massage:
Pamper yourself and relax with a nice long massage. Choose a nicer spa to really pamper yourself. Many spas offer wine and a nice area to relax before or after your massage which can add some much needed pampering. Do you and your spouse need some time together? Book a relaxing couples massage so you both can enjoy some relaxation time.

Splurge on a fancy treat:
Starbucks, fro-yo, Cheesecake factory or whatever your favorite treat may be. If you need a small pick me up, splurge on a treat that you don’t get yourself very often. A small treat here and there can be just what you need to ease the stresses of everyday life.

Share a bottle of wine with a friend:
Many places have wine nights so you might be able to score on some great wine specials. Time with your girlfriends is especially important as you get older and don’t get as much time for yourself. As mothers, we often put ourselves last but it is important to care for your own well-being and get some time to unwind.

Working out:
Working out can be a great stress reliever and is great for your health. Join a zumba or kickboxing class. You might meet a few new friends while getting a killer workout in. If you don’t have time to go to a class, find a simple workout you can do at home. Although it is hard to sometimes find the time to workout, it will make you feel better and give you more energy.

Go for a walk:
Research shows many great benefits to walking. It is a simple but effective thing you can do to improve your mood, health & your well-being. It is also a great way to enjoy the weather in the warmer months.

Take a trip:
Whether it’s a small weekend get-away or a big vacation trip, some time away can really help us detox and recharge your battery. Saving for a big trip also gives you something to look forward to prior which will also add some extra happiness.

Lunch with friends:
Get your girlfriends together for lunch. If the weather is nice, pick a great spot that has outdoor seating and enjoy a good cocktail while you catch up. If you are one to eat healthier, splurge every once in awhile and get what you really want instead of trying to eat good all the time while dining out.

Find a hobby you love:
As I said, as we get older, it is important to have time to yourself. Finding time for a hobby you love is a great stress reliever and also gives you something to look forward to. Hobbies are a great way to build self-esteem as well, giving you an enhanced sense of purpose.

Dress the part:
Take the time to put some thought into how you look each day. Feeling good about yourself will boost your mood for the day and prepare you for the day ahead.
