Declutter, Organize your closet, Closet organization

The older we get, the more stuff we accumulate. More clothes. More shoes. More purses and bags. Eventually, our closets get so full that it is hard to find anything in there and we get into a cycle of wearing the same items over and over again. It is good to go through your closet twice a year to keep it clean and organized and get the full potential out of your wardrobe. With a clean, organized closet, it will be much easier to find something to wear each morning.

As we all know, it can be hard to let go of so many items that we are “going to wear some day”, but decluttering can really simplify your life and help with the daily stresses of finding something to wear. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in the last 6 months or if you have a harder time letting go, 1 year, get rid of it. You can have a garage sale or take it to a consignment store to make some extra cash. If you don’t want to spend the time organizing to sell them, give the items to Goodwill or a women’s shelter to support a great cause. You can get a receipt when you donate and count it as a donation for your yearly taxes.

Set some time aside to really go through your closet. Try on all items that you haven’t worn in awhile. If they fit poorly, get rid of them. Some women do tend to fluctuate in weight so it is perfectly fine to keep smaller or larger clothes if needed. Just make sure the clothes that do not currently fit are organized and stored in a tub or somewhere else so they are not cluttering up your closet. Also, if there are items that fit but you just don’t seem to like them or wear them anymore, follow the rule noted above to get rid of them. If you have a lot undecided items the first time you organize, start a tub and put them away for a month or two. Get them back out after a couple months to make your decision to either keep or discard the items.

It is also helpful to put seasonal items away in off-seasons to keep everything more organized. This is especially helpful for winter items that are thicker an bulkier and may take up more room in your closet. I usually clean out my closet every summer and winter and go through my seasonal items at the same time.

Once you are done going through your closet, organize it however works best for you. Some people like to organize by color. I personally like to keep like items together such as all tanks, blouses, cardigans and so on. If you have a small closet, use baskets or bins to organize scarves, purses and other accessories. If you have extra room in your closet, add extra shelving to utilize the extra space to organize jeans and bulky items like sweaters.

I hope that these tips will help you organize your closet and declutter your life a little bit. Although it is sometimes hard to part with things, it is a good feeling to declutter. Taking the time to clean and organize your closet will simplify your routine, making your life much easier each morning to find something to wear.
